Vernon Kay has built a reputation as one of Britain’s most quick-witted broadcasters, but even years of live radio couldn’t save him from an unforgettable on-air blunder that left both his colleagues and listeners in stitches.
What started as an innocent conversation about one of Britain’s most popular footwear brands quickly spiraled into a hilarious moment that had Vernon joking he might have just talked himself out of a job.
And once he realized what he’d accidentally said, there was no going back.
One Word Changed Everything
During his BBC Radio 2 mid-morning show, Vernon was reading a message from a listener who proudly admitted to wearing Crocs with socks.
Simple enough.
But as he read the message aloud, his pronunciation of the word “Crocs” sounded dangerously close to an offensive swear word, creating a split-second live radio moment that instantly sent the studio into uncontrollable laughter.
The unexpected slip caught Vernon completely off guard.
Realizing what had just happened, he burst into laughter before jokingly pleading with the production team.
“Oh, clip that. Clip that. I want that on my… not my highlights, my lowlights.”
The presenter then tried to recover while laughing at himself, insisting listeners should make sure they owned “proper Crocs” before cheekily warning they might otherwise “be in trouble.”
His Co-Star Couldn’t Resist
As Vernon struggled to compose himself, travel presenter Ellie Brennan seized the opportunity to tease him.
“You’re gonna be in trouble,” she laughed, as the studio continued erupting with laughter.
Rather than shy away from the awkward moment, Vernon leaned into the comedy.
“I hope my Crocs work because at our age, you never know,” he joked.
When Ellie added, “Especially with socks on,” Vernon immediately fired back with another playful remark, telling listeners it was “safer” to keep the socks on.
The exchange only made everyone laugh harder.
The Joke That Had Everyone Talking
Eventually, Vernon delivered the line that perfectly summed up the entire incident.
Still laughing, he quipped:
“I’ve loved working here. Thanks very much. Had a great time.”
