For most children, turning 10 is a milestone filled with excitement, birthday parties, balloons, presents, and dreams of making unforgettable memories with friends and family.
For Florence, however, her milestone birthday will instead be spent within the walls of a hospital.
After months of unimaginable challenges, her family has revealed that yet another devastating setback has delayed the next step in her recovery, leaving the brave young girl heartbroken as she continues to battle the complications that come with an almost non-existent immune system.
Another Difficult Week
The family shared that Florence’s planned medical procedures have been cancelled once again after doctors discovered her neutrophil levels had fallen even lower than before.
Neutrophils, a type of white blood cell, play a crucial role in helping the body fight infections. When those levels become dangerously low, even the smallest illness can become life-threatening.
As a result, doctors had no choice but to postpone the procedures.
The setback has also brought painful new complications.
Florence has developed a severe mouth ulcer that has left her cheek swollen and made an already difficult situation even harder to endure.
“When your white blood cell count and neutrophils are this low, it makes you feel absolutely dreadful,” her family explained.
Living in Isolation
While the physical symptoms are difficult enough, Florence’s parents say the emotional toll has become equally heartbreaking.
Because she remains neutropenic, Florence cannot safely mix with other people. Until doctors receive the test results they need, many of the restrictions designed to protect her from infection cannot be lifted.
That means no family outings.
No birthday adventures.
No opportunities to simply enjoy being a child.
Instead, Florence continues to spend her days waiting.
“The hardest part for Florence isn’t just feeling poorly. It’s the isolation,” her family shared.
The uncertainty has left them feeling trapped in what they describe as “limbo”—unable to move forward but also unable to return to normal life.
Tears and Frustration
The emotional strain has become impossible to hide.
According to her family, this week has been filled with tears.
“From Florence. From me.”
Like any 10-year-old, Florence simply wants to go out, explore the world and make memories with the people she loves.
After everything she has endured throughout her treatment, her parents say they desperately hoped this chapter would finally be different.
They wanted life to begin again.
They wanted Florence to stop merely surviving and finally start living.
Instead, another delay has forced those dreams to remain on hold.
The Cruel Timing
Then came another heartbreaking piece of news.
The hospital informed the family that Florence’s postponed procedures have now been rescheduled—for the very day she turns 10.
It means she will still be in hospital when she reaches the milestone birthday.
It also means she won’t yet be able to ring the hospital bell—a deeply symbolic moment that marks the end of treatment for so many children battling serious illnesses.
For Florence and her family, that bell has become more than just a tradition.
It represents hope.
Freedom.
A new beginning.
For now, it will have to wait.
A Birthday They Never Imagined
Florence’s mother admitted she had pictured this birthday very differently.
She had dreamed of making a huge fuss over her daughter.
She wanted Florence’s first double-digit birthday to be free from hospitals, illness and medical treatments.
It would have been the first birthday since Florence was just five years old that wasn’t overshadowed by her health struggles.
Instead of hospital corridors, she imagined laughter.
Instead of medical equipment, balloons.
Instead of waiting rooms, unforgettable family memories.
Although that celebration has now been postponed, her family says they refuse to let one date define the occasion.
“Birthdays aren’t about one date on the calendar,” they explained.
“They’re about celebrating the incredible person she is.”
When Florence is well enough, they promise she’ll have the celebration she truly deserves.
Finding Gratitude in the Hardest Moments
Despite the disappointment, Florence’s family says they never lose sight of how fortunate they are.
They know there are parents who never get the chance to celebrate another birthday with their child.
That perspective remains with them every single day.
They also continue to express overwhelming gratitude toward the donor family whose selfless decision gave Florence another chance at life.
Their gift, they say, made more birthdays possible.
More memories.
More hugs.
More time together.
“We are endlessly grateful to Florence’s donor family,” they wrote.
“Their selfless decision changed our lives forever.”
Making the Best of a Hospital Birthday
Even though Florence won’t be celebrating where they had hoped, her family is determined to make the day as magical as possible.
Her hospital room will be decorated.
There will be birthday songs.
There will be laughter.
There will be cake.
Most importantly, there will be love.
Because while hospitals can delay treatments and change plans, they cannot take away what matters most—being together.
Holding Onto Hope
For now, Florence’s family is choosing hope over despair.
They believe this latest setback is simply another delay rather than the end of the journey.
They continue to celebrate every small improvement, every encouraging test result, and every tiny victory that brings Florence one step closer to recovery.
Above all else, they continue to believe that one day soon, Florence will finally ring that bell.
And when that moment finally comes, it won’t simply mark the end of treatment.
It will represent years of courage, resilience, love, and determination from a little girl who has already overcome more than most people face in a lifetime.
Until then, Florence’s family says they’ll continue taking life one day at a time—holding onto hope, cherishing every birthday, and believing that brighter days are still ahead for their remarkable little girl.
