Dame Prue Leith has finally opened up about why she stepped away from The Great British Bake Off, revealing that after nine years on the hit show, she craved fresh challenges—and more time in the sunshine.
The 86-year-old culinary legend, who was replaced by Nigella Lawson earlier this year, told Katherine Ryan on her What’s My Age? podcast:
“Bake Off was absolutely wonderful, I loved it and I love the people, but it wasn’t new—every year was exactly the same.”
Prue, who previously spent 11 years on The Great British Menu, admitted that the repetitive schedule contributed to her decision. “I could have happily carried on, but shrinking horizons forced me into it,” she said.
Alongside the need for new experiences, Prue wanted more quality time with her husband, John Playfair, and family. In an interview with Heat Magazine, she revealed plans for summer getaways with her grandchildren and a three-week road trip along Italy’s Puglia coast.
“One of the reasons I gave up Bake Off was so that I could have more of a summer—and more holidays. I’ve already booked a week in France with all my grandchildren and their parents,” she said.
Despite leaving the tent, Prue shows no signs of slowing down. Her Cotswolds Kitchen series has been renewed for another season, she has filmed a new travel programme with former Bake Off host Sandi Toksvig in South Africa, and she has launched her latest book, Being Old… and Learning to Love It.
Meanwhile, The Great British Bake Off continues with Paul Hollywood joined by new judge Nigella Lawson, while presenters Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding return to the familiar hosting duo.
Prue’s parting words reflect a balance of reflection and excitement: “I’ve loved my time on Bake Off, but there’s a whole world out there to explore. And I intend to enjoy every minute of it.”
