It was one of the most talked-about “on-air mistakes” of the NFL season — and now, the truth is finally out.
Broadcasting legend Tony Romo has revealed that when he referred to Taylor Swift as Travis Kelce’s “wife” during live broadcasts in December 2023, he did it on purpose.
Yes — really.
Speaking this week on SiriusXM’s The Morning Mash Up, Romo, 45, confessed that the now-viral moments were a deliberate attempt to “play with the fans a little bit” at the height of Swift–Kelce mania.
“I was like, ‘And there’s… I think I said, ‘His wife,’” Romo recalled.
“I did that on purpose — and people were like, ‘Do you know something?’”
His answer?
“Nah. I just wanted to make you guys think for a second.”
🎙️ The moments that broke the internet
Romo first raised eyebrows on December 10, 2023 during the Kansas City Chiefs’ loss to the Buffalo Bills, when he casually referred to Swift — who was in the stands supporting Kelce — as his “wife.”
Just one week later, he did it again.
“As you see, Kelce’s wife, Taylor Swift, in the audience,” Romo said on air during a game against the Raiders — before abruptly catching himself.
“Er, I’m sorry… girlfriend!”
Another commentator quickly jumped in with a laugh:
“Not yet.”
At the time, fans went into full meltdown mode — dissecting every syllable, wondering if Romo had inside information or had accidentally revealed a secret engagement.
😅 ‘I was just messing with you’
Now, Romo insists it was nothing more than playful mischief.
“I just wanted to mess with you a little bit,” he admitted, adding that the media frenzy around Swift attending NFL games had made broadcasts unusually intense.
Asked how he managed to keep his composure while calling the first Super Bowl of the Swift–Kelce era, Romo joked:
“It was so difficult. I don’t know how I got through it.”
💍 Then the joke became reality
What makes the confession even more remarkable is what happened next.
On August 26, 2025, Swift and Kelce officially announced their engagement on Instagram — instantly turning Romo’s “joke” into an eerily accurate prediction.
“Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married 🧨,” Swift wrote, sending fans into another frenzy.
Since then, Swift has openly gushed about her fiancé, telling The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that Kelce is “my favorite person I’ve ever met,” and praising how he “really crushed it” when planning the proposal.
She later told The Graham Norton Show that the surprise was unforgettable.
👀 A wink heard around the world
Looking back, Romo’s playful on-air moment has taken on a whole new meaning — blurring the line between coincidence, comedy, and clairvoyance.
What was once dismissed as a harmless broadcast flub is now remembered as one of the most iconic “accidental” moments in sports-pop culture crossover history.
And Romo?
He’s owning it — with a grin.
Sometimes, even the jokes come true. 💍👀
