Jeffrey Bassa arrived in Kansas City as a fifth-round pick with big dreams and bigger expectations. By the end of his rookie season, those dreams had been reshaped by a far tougher reality — one that had nothing to do with playbooks or opponents.
Speaking with reporters this week, the Chiefs linebacker admitted that his first year in the league forced him to “look in the mirror” in ways he never had before.
“I’m going to go back and review everything — what I did right, what I did wrong, where I can grow,” Bassa said. “That’s becoming a pro. That’s on me now.”
For the former Oregon standout, the biggest shock wasn’t the speed of the game — it was life outside the lines.
“The time management… being on your own,” he explained. “Knowing when to take care of your body, when to rest, when to step away and be with family. That’s the hardest part.”
Bassa developed into a trusted communicator on defense and carved out a role on special teams, learning daily from veteran leaders while quietly building his foundation. But he knows the next leap won’t come from coaches alone.
It will come from discipline, reflection — and the kind of self-accountability that turns rookies into professionals.
With a full offseason ahead, Bassa isn’t just training his body.
He’s building the mindset of a player who plans to be here for a long time.
