Appearing in an interview looking worse for wear, Patrick Kielty has shared candid truths about the breakdown of his marriage to Cat Deeley — admitting, “We’d been sleeping in separate beds for a long time before deciding to split”… and even surprising fans by adding, “Her new boyfriend is a good man.”
The couple stunned the public last month when they announced their separation in a joint statement, just weeks before their 13th wedding anniversary. “We have taken the decision to end our marriage and are now separated. There is no other party involved,” they said, adding that they would “continue to be united as loving parents to our children.” ![]()
However, Patrick has now gone further, revealing intimate details about the final months of their marriage. Speaking openly, he admitted the decision to end things had been a long time coming:
“We’d been sleeping in separate beds for quite a while. It wasn’t sudden — more like a slow realisation. We cared for each other, but it just wasn’t the same. In the end, staying friends felt more important than forcing a marriage that had stopped working.”
Patrick also made an unexpected comment about Cat’s new partner:
“Her new boyfriend is a good man. If he makes her happy, then that’s all I can ask for.”
Behind the scenes, tensions had already been high. Family members were reportedly left deeply hurt earlier this year when Cat did not attend the funeral of Patrick’s mother, Mary, in March — choosing instead to remain in London with their children and present This Morning that day.
One relative told the Daily Mail: “Whatever difficulties you have, a moment like that — burying your mother — is when you expect your partner by your side. The fact she wasn’t there… it spoke volumes.”
Patrick’s friends say the strain was compounded by the couple’s living arrangements. While Cat is based in London with their sons Milo, 9, and James, 7, Patrick spends much of the week in Ireland filming The Late Late Show. Their busy schedules meant they were often “like ships passing in the night.”
Cat had even admitted publicly earlier this year that they were sleeping in separate rooms due to her early-morning TV schedule. “From Monday to Thursday, I sleep in the guest bedroom so I can get up at 5am without disturbing him,” she said at the time.
The pair first met in 2002 while presenting BBC’s Fame Academy but didn’t go public as a couple until 2011. They married in Rome the following year and welcomed their two sons soon after.
While their marriage may have ended, Patrick insists their priority remains their children. “We’re still a family,” he said. “We’ll always be there for our boys — just not under the same roof.”
