For a brief moment in the summer of 2017, Patrick Mahomes’ future — both in football and in love — felt painfully uncertain.
Not in Kansas City.
Not inside Arrowhead Stadium.
But inside an airport in Iceland.
Just three months after the Kansas City Chiefs stunned the NFL by trading up to draft Mahomes with the 10th overall pick, the rookie quarterback was already drowning in expectations. He had uprooted his life, moved from Texas to Missouri, and thrown himself into Andy Reid’s playbook — pages of schemes stuffed into his suitcase like a survival guide.
Yet that summer, football wasn’t the reason he boarded a transatlantic flight.
Brittany was.
✈️ A dream that forced them apart
While Mahomes was preparing for the biggest opportunity of his life, Brittany — his childhood sweetheart — was chasing one of her own.
At just 22, she had earned a chance to play professional soccer in Iceland, following an outstanding college career. It was an opportunity she couldn’t turn down — even though it meant leaving the United States weeks after Patrick was drafted.
For the first time since they fell in love as teenagers, the couple faced something unfamiliar: long-distance uncertainty.
Two dreams.
Two continents.
No guarantees.

🧊 Fame meets humility in Iceland
When Patrick landed in Reykjavik, Chiefs fans somehow recognized him instantly — more than 3,300 miles from Kansas City. The rookie quarterback was already learning how quickly anonymity disappears.
But once they reached the quiet town of Mosfellsbær, life became surprisingly modest.
They stayed with Sigurbjart Sigurjonsson, president of the Icelandic club Brittany had joined. He had no idea his guest was an NFL first-round pick.
“We didn’t know who he was,” Sigurjonsson later admitted.
“We recommended reasonably priced restaurants because we didn’t think they had much money.”
The irony was staggering.
Mahomes’ rookie deal was worth $16.4 million — yet he slept on a couch, because the beds were too small for his 6-foot-2, 225-pound frame.
Every night, while Brittany trained, Patrick quietly studied his playbook.
“I didn’t understand why he kept looking at that folder,” Sigurjonsson said.
“Of course, he was preparing for the season.”
💔 When Brittany’s dream began to crack
While Patrick prepared for the NFL, Brittany pushed herself harder than ever.
She gained muscle.
She trained relentlessly.
She believed.
But Icelandic football was unforgiving. Despite making five appearances and scoring two goals, the physical demands proved overwhelming.
“She was a nice girl,” Sigurjonsson said.
“But she wasn’t strong enough for the league.”
The distance from her family — and from Patrick — weighed heavily.
After nine nights on the couch, Patrick flew back to the United States. Brittany stayed behind, alone, still fighting for her place.
Eventually, reality won.
She returned home.
🏠 Kansas City became their reset

Brittany joined Patrick in Kansas City, leaving soccer behind and turning her focus toward fitness, wellness, and entrepreneurship. It was the beginning of a new chapter — built not on trophies, but stability.
“Setting down roots in Kansas City was huge for us,” Patrick later said.
“We’re trying to be here for a long, long time.”
They meant it.
🏆 From uncertainty to influence
In 2020, Patrick won his first Super Bowl.
That same year, Brittany became part of the ownership group for the Kansas City Current, helping launch the world’s first stadium built specifically for a professional women’s team.
Patrick joined the ownership group in 2023.
From couch-sleeping dreamers in Iceland…
To power players shaping Kansas City sports culture.
✨ A world they never imagined
Today, Brittany’s profile has exploded — from businesswoman to public figure, strengthened further by her close friendship with Taylor Swift. She and Patrick are now expected to sit front row when Swift marries Patrick’s teammate Travis Kelce later this year.
It’s a life impossibly far removed from that quiet Icelandic summer.
Back then, nothing was guaranteed.
Not football.
Not fame.
Not even each other.
And yet — that moment of separation, sacrifice, and uncertainty helped shape everything that followed.
Sometimes, destiny doesn’t begin in stadiums…
It begins with a couch, a suitcase, and a decision not to quit. 💔➡️🔥
