This week’s tense episode of 22 Kids and Counting captures a terrifying moment as Millie Radford’s husband Harley Passmore is rushed to hospital with suspected stroke symptoms — following an emotional argument over adopting her daughter, Ophelia.

Millie, daughter of Sue and Noel Radford, was left distraught as paramedics sped Harley to hospital after he suddenly fell ill during a heated row. The couple, who tied the knot last year, have been struggling with the question of whether Harley should legally adopt Millie’s daughter Ophelia, four.

Ophelia was born before Millie and Harley began dating, but with her biological father not in the picture, Harley has raised her as his own. In the programme, Harley explains his deep desire to make the bond official.

“I’ve been in Ophelia’s life since she was six months old. Obviously, she’s not my biological daughter, but I treat her like my own. I want people to see us as father and daughter. She doesn’t have the same name as me, Millie, Chester, or Elodie. When she’s older, she’ll notice the difference, and I don’t want her to feel left out.”

Millie’s Worries

Despite Harley’s determination, Millie admits to fears about the adoption process and how it might impact her little girl.

“I’ve been worried for Ophelia. She’s only four, and we’ve never told her Harley isn’t her biological dad. It’s a lot for her to handle at such a young age. My concern is that one day she might resent Harley when she finds out the truth, and that could cause hatred towards him.”

These tensions came to a head during a blazing row, after which Harley suddenly became unwell.

A Frightening Emergency

In emotional scenes, Millie is seen calling her mother Sue: “I’m in an ambulance with Harley. One half of his face has gone lopsided. It looks like he’s had a stroke. He’s slurring his words. He’s panicking, I’m panicking.”

As Sue and Noel stepped in to care for the couple’s three children — Ophelia, Chester, three, and Elodie, one — Millie sat anxiously at Harley’s bedside in the stroke ward.

“I was in shock. It was so scary. I felt guilty straight away, wondering if the arguing had caused it. If something had happened to him, how would I have lived with that? I’ve done almost all of motherhood with Harley. I can’t imagine him not being there.”

The Diagnosis

After an agonising wait, doctors confirmed Harley had not suffered a stroke. Instead, he was diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy — a neurological condition that causes weakness or paralysis on one side of the face. While many sufferers recover fully, the condition can sometimes lead to lasting issues, even sight loss.

Harley said with relief: “They came in with my results. My MRI was totally fine, which means I didn’t have a stroke.”

A Change of Heart

The ordeal profoundly shifted Millie’s perspective.

“When I thought Harley was having a stroke, it was terrifying. I realised how much we needed him and how much the kids needed him. It made me change my mind about the adoption. I’m filling in the forms. If anything ever happened to Harley, I know Ophelia would want him to be her dad — so that’s what I’m going to make happen.”

The couple’s emotional journey highlights not only the challenges of blended families but also the life-changing power of love, commitment, and second chances.
