When whispers started circulating that Alex Smith could be a surprise candidate to replace Matt Nagy as the Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, fans lit up the internet.
Then Smith shut it all down — instantly.
Appearing on Up & Adams with Kay Adams, the former Chiefs quarterback laughed off the idea with a dose of real-life reality.
“No way,” Smith said, smiling. “My kids are 14, 12 and 9. You take that job and it’s basically, ‘See you in five years.’ That’s tough.”
Smith didn’t stop there. He made it clear the decision had nothing to do with a lack of love for Kansas City — or for Nagy.
“I love Matt. That’s my guy,” he added. “But no.”
Inside Andy Reid’s Inner Circle
Smith also offered rare insight into how Andy Reid actually runs his coaching tree — and why outside hires are the exception, not the rule.
“Andy rarely brings somebody in from outside his circle,” Smith explained. “That’s not a bad thing. But someone like Mike Kafka fits that mold perfectly.”
Kafka, who spent the last few seasons as the Giants’ offensive coordinator before taking over as interim head coach late in 2025, checks every box Reid looks for: deep familiarity with the Chiefs system, plus fresh ideas gained while working under Brian Daboll in New York.
Who Really Calls the Shots?
Smith also peeled back the curtain on one uncomfortable truth about the OC role in Kansas City.
“When you’re the offensive coordinator, you only have so much input,” he said. “Andy is the offense — and everyone knows it.”
With Nagy now interviewing across the league and the Chiefs preparing for potential staff turnover, Reid’s next move will say a lot about the direction of the franchise.
But if anyone thought Alex Smith was about to jump back into the grind?
He made it crystal clear — family comes first.
