FIRST BABY JOY AFTER FEAR — Made In Chelsea’s Sam & Alice Vanderpump Welcome Baby Boy With Powerful Name After His Devastating Diagnosis

For Made In Chelsea star Sam Vanderpump, the past year has been defined by fear, uncertainty — and moments he once feared he might never live to see.

This week, that fear gave way to joy.

Sam and his wife Alice Vanderpump have welcomed their first child together — a baby boy — in an emotional milestone that arrives just months after Sam was diagnosed with irreversible end-stage liver disease.

The couple confirmed to HELLO! that they have named their son Marmaduke, affectionately known as Duke — a name carrying deep and poignant family meaning.

Marmaduke was the favourite name of Sam’s late father Mark Vanderpump, who tragically died in 2018 at the age of 59.

For Sam, the choice was never in doubt.

“It felt right,” friends say.
“It was a way of keeping his dad close — especially at a moment he once feared he might never reach.”

A Birth Surrounded by Quiet Courage

Alice gave birth on Monday 9 February at the exclusive Kensington Wing of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, just weeks after the couple quietly married in an intimate ceremony at Chelsea Registry Office.

No spectacle.
No fanfare.
Just love — and resolve.

The pair chose to marry shortly before Christmas, prioritising commitment and togetherness during what Sam has since described as the most frightening chapter of his life.

The Illness That Changed Everything

Their wedding followed a devastating health crisis.

In late 2024, Sam became seriously ill with flu. Within days, his condition spiralled into sepsis, triggering liver and kidney failure. Doctors later confirmed the truth that would alter his future forever: Sam had irreversible end-stage liver disease and would need a transplant to survive.

Just after learning of his diagnosis, Sam discovered Alice was pregnant.

“Am I Even Going To Meet My Son?”

Speaking candidly on the We Need To Talk podcast with Paul C Brunson, Sam admitted the fear was overwhelming.

“I always get sad thinking my dad will never see his grandchild,” he said quietly.
“And then suddenly you’re asking yourself — am I going to see my child? That’s terrifying.”

Born with congenital hepatic fibrosis of the liver and polycystic kidney disease, Sam had lived most of his life without symptoms. It wasn’t until December that his organs began to fail.

For weeks, the future felt impossibly fragile.

Love in the Middle of the Storm

Despite the uncertainty — or perhaps because of it — Sam proposed to Alice in March, shortly after being hospitalised in January with life-threatening sepsis.

Their wedding was organised in just four weeks and followed by a private dinner at The Lanesborough. The couple skipped traditions, chose Alice’s dress together, and focused on what mattered most: being present.

“I was struggling emotionally in the weeks leading up to the wedding because of everything going on with my health,” Sam admitted.
“But I’ve been so over-the-moon happy these past few days.”

They now plan a larger celebration in May 2027, once life has settled and Sam’s health journey allows space for joy without fear.

A Vanderpump Legacy — And a New Beginning

Sam is the nephew of Lisa Vanderpump, and the son of her late brother Mark — a businessman and DJ whose presence still looms large in Sam’s life.

Explaining the name Marmaduke, Sam once shared:

“My dad always wanted to call my brother ‘Duke’ because he thought he’d be Prime Minister — Duke Vanderpump.
My mum hated it, so my brother became Jack. But Dad still gave him the middle name Daniels.”

Laughing, he added:

Hope After the Darkest Days

For Sam and Alice, baby Duke represents far more than first-time parenthood.

He is hope — after months of fear.
Light — after hospital corridors and hard conversations.
And proof that even in the most fragile moments, life can still find a way forward.

Once, Sam feared he might never meet his son.

Now, he holds him.

And in that moment, everything changes.
