After years of rumours, hope, and unanswered questions, the BBC has finally made it official: Doctor Foster is returning for a third — and final — series, with Suranne Jones once again stepping into the role of the unforgettable Gemma Foster.
The explosive psychological thriller will air on BBC One in 2026, marking the end of a story that has haunted viewers for nearly a decade.
Coming just days after the BBC confirmed the return of Line of Duty for a seventh series, drama fans are being treated to a major revival — and emotions are already running high.
Nine Years Later — Gemma Foster Returns
It has been nine long years since audiences last saw Gemma Foster on screen.
The first two series, broadcast in 2015 and 2017, became cultural talking points — gripping viewers with their raw portrayal of betrayal, revenge, and psychological warfare. Performances from Suranne Jones, Bertie Carvel, Jodie Comer, Victoria Hamilton, and Adam James kept audiences riveted.
Now, at last, the story is set to continue — and conclude.
“One Last Chapter”
Series creator and writer Mike Bartlett returns to steer the final chapter, describing the new episodes as a continuation of Gemma’s relentless search for justice.
“I always hoped we would be able to tell the final part of Gemma’s story,” he said.
“It’s about a woman seeking justice in an unfair world — something that feels just as relevant now as when Gemma first found that blonde hair on the scarf.”
He teased the return of familiar faces and unresolved tensions.
“It’s been a joy to work again with the now very grown-up Tom Taylor, the inimitable Bertie Carvel, and of course the incomparable Suranne Jones,” Bartlett added.
“And to revisit Parminster — where it turns out secrets, betrayals, vengeance… and perhaps one final dinner party are still waiting.”
Where Series 3 Picks Up
When viewers first met GP Gemma Foster, she appeared to have the perfect life — a successful career, a beautiful home, and a devoted husband.
That illusion shattered when she discovered her husband Simon was having an affair — and that his mistress was pregnant.
What followed was a meticulous and often terrifying act of revenge.
Series 2 jumped forward several years, showing Simon settled with new wife Kate, played by Jodie Comer. But peace proved short-lived. The series ended in chaos, with Gemma and Simon’s teenage son Tom — played by Tom Taylor — running away from the destruction left by his parents’ war.
The New Synopsis — And a Dangerous Fresh Start
According to the BBC, series 3 begins a decade after Gemma’s original act of revenge.
Gemma is still a GP. Still living in the same house. But she appears to be on the brink of a fresh beginning.
She has met someone new. She is preparing to get married.
However, as the wedding approaches and family and friends gather, shadows from the past begin to creep back in — threatening not only her happiness, but her reputation.
As Gemma fights to protect the people she loves and uncover who is intent on hurting her, the question remains: can she finally put the past to rest and claim the future she deserves — before it’s too late?
Who Is Returning?
Suranne Jones remains firmly at the centre of the storm.
Reflecting on her return, she said the timing finally felt right.
“We needed space from the first two series,” she explained.
“And we needed Tom — Gemma and Simon’s runaway son — to come back as an adult, with questions.”
She added that the new series explores accountability, trauma, and whether anyone can truly escape the damage of their past.
Bertie Carvel will also reprise his role as Simon Foster, with Tom Taylor returning as their now-adult son.
The BBC has not yet confirmed whether Jodie Comer will return, nor revealed the identity of Gemma’s new fiancé or the wider supporting cast.
How Many Episodes — And When Will It Air?
Like its predecessors, series 3 will consist of five episodes, each running for 60 minutes.
Filming is scheduled to begin later this spring, with production once again taking place in and around Hertfordshire.
The final series is expected to air towards the end of 2026 or early 2027.
“An Amazing Ride” Ahead
Executive producers Roanna Benn and Jude Liknaitzky described the scripts as “thrilling, gripping and audacious,” promising that old wounds will reopen and new secrets will surface.
“After nearly a decade away, Gemma Foster’s story is finally reaching its conclusion,” they said.
“This last chapter promises all the tension, betrayal and razor-sharp drama that made Doctor Foster such a phenomenon in the first place.”
For fans who have waited patiently — the end is finally in sight.
