For Samantha Womack, a cancer diagnosis didn’t just interrupt her life — it forced her to confront the unthinkable.
The 53-year-old actress, beloved for her role as Ronnie Mitchell on EastEnders, has revealed that during her battle with breast cancer she quietly began preparing for the possibility that she might not survive. It’s a confession that has left many stunned by its honesty — and moved by its clarity.
When Fear Becomes Inevitable
Samantha shared her diagnosis in 2022 while paying tribute to Olivia Newton-John. By December of that year, she delivered the news everyone hoped for: she was cancer-free. But the emotional reckoning, she says, began much earlier — the moment cancer entered her life.
“You obviously never want to lose your life,” she admitted.
“But cancer forces you to look into that cupboard.”

From the start, Samantha says she prepared herself for worst-case scenarios — even imagining what life would look like if she had only months left to live.
“Once you’ve opened that cupboard,” she explained, “it’s not as frightening as you think. It’s there — and you don’t know when it might fully open.”
A Shift That Changed Her Forever
Six months of treatment reshaped far more than Samantha’s health. She has since acknowledged that she now has “far less money” than before — but insists the experience transformed her priorities in ways she wouldn’t trade back.
She speaks of a new confidence in listening to her instincts, whether that means taking a break, insisting on medical check-ups, or turning down work that no longer feels right.
“If something isn’t a good fit for me,” she said,
“I can now say no — without guilt.”
Living With Anxiety — Without Letting It Rule
Money worries, Samantha admits, have followed her since childhood, rooted in years of instability and fear. That anxiety hasn’t vanished — but it no longer controls her.
“I still worry,” she said honestly.
“But it doesn’t take over my whole body anymore. I know I’m safe.”
