Jenna Bush Hager couldn’t hold back her emotions as she reunited with Savannah Guthrie during the anchor’s return to Today after a month-long absence. Savannah’s emotional comeback to the show—following the disappearance of her mother, Nancy Guthrie, in late January—was a moment filled with raw sentiment. Jenna and her co-host Sheinelle Jones spoke candidly about their cherished reunion on air, emphasizing just how much the support meant to Savannah during this incredibly difficult time.
“Savannah has come back to her home here at 30 Rock,” Jenna shared with a touch of emotion during the March 5 episode, as she and Sheinelle joined in a heartfelt discussion about their colleague’s return. “We got to see her this morning. And in her perfect way, she talked to all of us, hugged every single person in this room, the crew.”
The Today anchor, who has been part of the show since 2011, is still uncertain about her official return date as co-anchor, but it’s clear that she’s determined to come back when she feels ready. “She has the intention to return to the show, even though it feels like the hardest thing to do,” Jenna explained. “It’s her home, where she feels so loved, and she is beyond loved here. We’re happy she’s back.”
Jenna also clarified that while the exact timing of Savannah’s full return remains unclear, seeing her in the studio was a step in the right direction. “I don’t know when she’s actually coming back,” Jenna said. “But she was here today, and that felt so good to hug her.”
Savannah, 54, has been leaning on her faith and the love of her colleagues and fans during the search for her mother. Jenna shared how deeply Savannah feels the community’s support, including the many well-wishes and the yellow flowers sent by her Today family. “The yellow flowers, the pins, all of your prayers—she feels them. She depends on them,” Jenna added with heartfelt gratitude.
Today co-host Sheinelle Jones, who experienced her own personal loss last year with the death of her husband, Uche Ojeh, from glioblastoma, also offered her support for Savannah. “I see it as we’re in this storm—and we’re not out of the storm—but there’s a light somewhere,” Sheinelle shared, her voice filled with quiet strength. “Her coming here and just being able to be with us, for us to hug her, I think it’s a step, right?”
As Savannah continues to grapple with the search for her mother, who was last seen in Tucson, Arizona, the Today anchors all agreed that Savannah’s brief return to the show was symbolic of the support she feels from both her work family and the public.
“She’s one of the most precious things in our lives,” Jenna said, and Sheinelle echoed, “We just keep loving her. We keep our arms around her, and we’re going to get her back here.”
Since Nancy’s disappearance, Savannah has been spending most of her time in Arizona, working with her siblings, Annie and Camron, to find their mother. Police believe Nancy may have been abducted, and authorities are continuing their search, which has now entered its second month.
Savannah shared an emotional public plea for her mother’s safe return, urging anyone with information to come forward. Meanwhile, the Today team continues to offer their unwavering support for Savannah, celebrating each small step forward in her recovery, both personally and professionally.
