Peter Alexander, the beloved Today show host and co-chief White House correspondent, has officially announced his departure from NBC News after more than two decades with the network. In an emotional statement, Alexander revealed his decision to step away, citing the need for a better balance between his personal and professional life. 
“I’ve spent more than 220 Friday nights away from my family in the last seven years,” Alexander shared. “It’s time to make a change. I’m excited to challenge myself with something new and find more time for my family.” At 49, Alexander, who has two daughters aged 12 and 10, expressed his deep love for the NBC team but acknowledged that his work-life balance had taken a toll on him.
A Career at NBC: From Baghdad to Beijing 
During his time at NBC, Alexander traveled the globe, covering stories from Baghdad to Banda Aceh, and Burbank to Beijing. “I’ve had the most incredible experience over 22 years with NBC News, alongside the best journalists in the world,” Alexander said in his farewell message.
He reflected on his long tenure, noting, “I’ve been part of the NBC family longer than I’ve had my own family, but now it’s time for a change.” His decision comes after years of speculation about his ambitions for top anchor positions at the network, spots that have recently been filled.
What’s Next for Peter Alexander? 
While details about his next move remain under wraps, there is growing speculation that Alexander may be heading to MS Now for an 11 a.m. weekday slot, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Fans have flooded Today’s Instagram with well-wishes, but many are left wondering what’s next for the respected journalist.
In his emotional departure speech, Alexander also wished his colleague, Savannah Guthrie, the best as she prepares to return to the show after a difficult period with her mother’s disappearance. Guthrie is set to return on April 6.
“I was taught that family comes first,” Alexander said. “The rest is just details.”
