Jesy Nelson has captured hearts across the globe with a heartfelt video of her daughter, Story, saying “mama” for the first time—a moment that Jesy described as making her “life complete.” This milestone is even more special as it comes amid the challenging journey she’s been facing with her twins, Ocean and Story, who were diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 1.

A Sweet Moment in the Midst of a Tough Battle

In the touching video, Jesy filmed Story lying under a blanket surrounded by cushion toys. As Story looked around, the word “mama” could be heard clearly, filling Jesy with emotion. “My life is complete,” Jesy wrote alongside the post, celebrating the small yet significant victory in the face of their ongoing battle with SMA.

Fighting for Change: Jesy’s Advocacy for SMA Testing

Since revealing her twins’ diagnosis in January, Jesy has used her platform to advocate for widespread newborn SMA testing. After a late diagnosis meant her children were unable to walk, she began pushing for the NHS to introduce screening for SMA in babies—a cause she continues to fight for. Jesy has made significant progress with her campaign, and last month, Health Secretary Wes Streeting confirmed that over 400,000 babies will be screened for SMA starting in October 2026.

Jesy passionately shared, “I’m so proud that SMA testing will be rolled out in England. It’s a huge win for the SMA community, but we still have a long way to go. Babies from certain areas still won’t get the test, and that needs to change.” She remains determined to make sure all babies across England have access to life-saving testing, regardless of their postcode.

A Family’s Triumph and Challenges 

Despite the emotional ups and downs, Jesy’s love and pride for her children are unshakeable. “It’s bittersweet,” she admitted, “because not all babies will be tested right away, but we are making strides. I will keep pushing until it’s nationwide.”

Alongside her advocacy work, Jesy has faced personal challenges, including a recent car theft that involved vital hospital equipment for her twins. Despite these setbacks, Jesy has remained strong, using her voice to raise awareness for both SMA and the challenges that come with caring for children with special medical needs. She even offered a £10,000 reward for information leading to the return of her stolen vehicle.
