One year after losing her husband, Uche Ojeh, to brain cancer, Today show anchor Sheinelle Jones is opening up about life, loss and the unexpected moments of joy that can still appear during the hardest chapters.
The beloved NBC personality, who has largely kept much of her personal journey private, took to Instagram on Monday, June 15, to share a heartfelt update with followers while away from the Today show.
Ojeh passed away in May 2025 at the age of 45 following a private battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. Since then, Jones has been navigating what she describes as her first year of grief while continuing to care for their three children and rebuild daily life.
In her emotional post, Jones shared a collection of recent photographs from everyday moments, including beach outings, work events, book tour appearances and time spent cheering from the sidelines at games. :max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/sheinelle-jones-637cc257b8ce4634bfe5001dc4568847.jpg)
“My friend told me I was overdue for a check-in … so I figured I’d just share some of the recent pics on my phone… kind of a snapshot at life lately,” Jones wrote.
She described the images as a reflection of the life she has been living over the past several months.
“From the sidelines at games, to the beach, book tour, and the office.”
Looking back on the year, Jones admitted that grief has not been a straightforward journey.
Instead, she said life has become a blend of joyful moments and difficult days, often existing side by side.
“It feels like the last few months have been some of the best of times, with some hard moments in between; perhaps that’s the new normal,” she reflected.
Jones also used the opportunity to reach out to others who may be experiencing loss of their own.
Offering words of encouragement, she reminded followers that grief and happiness can coexist.
“For anyone in this first year or so of grief … I just want you to know that I see you, and I hope you see me too.”
She continued with a message that resonated deeply with many readers.
“We can and must still have beautiful days filled with new wins, joy and hopefully peace that passes all understanding. Love you guys.”
The post quickly drew an outpouring of support from fans and friends, many of whom praised Jones for her honesty and strength.
One follower commented: “So beautifully said Sheinelle. Glad to see you having joy in your season of grief. They really can exist at the same time. Sending love and light.”
Before Ojeh’s death in May 2025, Jones stepped away from Today to spend precious time with her husband and their children as he battled the devastating illness.
She eventually returned to Studio 1A in September 2025 and later took on a new role as Jenna Bush Hager’s fourth-hour co-host in January 2026.
When discussing her return to television, Jones previously described the experience of losing her husband as a “beautiful nightmare.”
While acknowledging the pain of grief, she explained that moving forward does not mean leaving loved ones behind.
“We don’t move on, but we move forward with our loved ones,” she said at the time.
Jones also expressed hope that sharing her journey publicly could offer comfort to others facing similar challenges.
“I hope that just by me being on the set and me returning to work, it’s like, ‘OK, if I can do it, so can you, right?'”
A year after one of the most difficult periods of her life, Jones’ latest reflection serves as a reminder that healing is rarely linear — and that even after profound loss, moments of joy, gratitude and hope can still find a way through.
