Viewers of an NBC-affiliated morning news program were left stunned after veteran journalist Dustin Nolan unexpectedly announced his departure live on air — and delivered a message that quickly sparked conversation. 
The Emmy Award-winning broadcaster, who has spent the last four years at Iowa station KWQC-TV6, revealed during Friday’s live morning broadcast that he was stepping away from the news industry altogether.
Appearing emotional as he addressed viewers, Nolan paused before sharing the announcement many did not see coming.
“I’ll try to get through this,” he began. 
“Well, before we go this morning, I have an announcement.”
“Today is my last day here at KWQC TV6.”
The unexpected statement immediately caught the attention of longtime viewers who had welcomed Nolan into their homes each morning.
Continuing his remarks, the anchor confirmed that the decision was entirely his own.
“I have chosen to step away from the news industry.”

Nolan then expanded on what he believes local journalism should strive to accomplish.
“I also believe that we as a local news station have to be more than trends or sanitized news because it makes people feel uncomfortable.”
“That’s why the facts matter and that’s why we do what we do here.”
He continued by stressing the importance of challenging audiences to think beyond their usual perspectives.
“We have to take people out of their bubbles and comfort zones and make them think about the world we all live in.”
The comments quickly fueled speculation among viewers, many of whom wondered whether the remarks hinted at broader frustrations within the industry.
Nolan joined KWQC in 2022 and became a familiar face on the station’s morning programming.
His wife, Jenna Jackson, also works at the station and served as his co-anchor on the Quad Cities Today morning show.
Together, the couple became one of local television’s most recognizable on-air partnerships.
Away from the newsroom, they are parents to two children and have frequently shared their family’s journey with viewers.
The pair also celebrated a major professional milestone in 2025 when they received a Mid-America Emmy Award for Best Morning/Daytime Newscast in the small-to-medium market category.
