Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has revealed the chilling moment that the investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, mother of Today Show star Savannah Guthrie, shifted from a routine missing person case to a darker, more urgent probe.

Nancy, 84, was reported missing from her Tucson, Arizona home on February 1. She was last seen by her daughter, Annie Guthrie, and her son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni. Sheriff Nanos shared with People that authorities were alerted to Nancy’s disappearance around 2 p.m., approximately two hours after first arriving at the property. Shortly thereafter, a deputy texted Nanos stating, “the scene doesn’t look right, something is wrong…we’re calling homicide.”
“Homicide was called because the investigative unit in charge of missing persons took over,” Nanos explained. “Search and rescue assists with operational support, but the investigative team determines the direction of the case.”
Evidence at the scene included blood droplets on Nancy’s front porch matching her DNA, as well as a mixed DNA sample from multiple individuals, which remains under analysis. “Our DNA labs are working closely with investigators every day, exploring new leads and ways to make the evidence work for us,” said Nanos.
Despite the challenges, the sheriff remains confident. “How can we do more with what we have? That’s why I say we’re getting closer. Our team is doing a good job and I fully, 100% believe we will solve this case,” he declared.
Nanos also addressed the Pima County Board of Supervisors’ recent decision not to remove him from office, acknowledging that the department needs improvements. “I listened to the board, and I agree. Sometimes you have to sit back and listen. It’s my job to get a hold of my department and address ongoing issues,” he said.
Just days after the sheriff’s update, Savannah Guthrie shared a heart-wrenching Mother’s Day tribute to her mother. She wrote, “Mother, daughter, sister, Nonie – we miss you with every breath. We will never stop looking for you. We will never be at peace until we find you. We need help. Someone knows something that can make the difference. Call 1800CALLFBI. You can be anonymous, and the reward remains available. Please keep praying. Bring her home.” The post included a video highlighting cherished family moments with Nancy.
Savannah’s friends and colleagues flooded the post with support. David Muir wrote: “We’re all with you, Savannah,” while Hoda Kotb added: “I love you SG…Bring her home.” Craig Melvin commented: “Our ceaseless prayers continue,” Dylan Dreyer wrote: “Thinking of you and I continue to pray every day,” and Sheinelle Jones said: “Sending you all of my love…and yes, still praying, always.”
The case has now spanned more than 100 days, with authorities tirelessly investigating every lead to bring Nancy Guthrie home safely.
