Gardening legend Alan Titchmarsh has opened up about the emotional decision to leave the Hampshire garden he’s nurtured for over two decades. Speaking in BBC Gardeners’ World magazine, the 77-year-old horticulturist revealed he wanted to move on while he still had the choice, rather than being forced by circumstances.
Alan and his wife Alison have sold their £3.5 million property, swapping it for a more manageable single-storey Surrey bungalow. Maintaining the sprawling four-acre garden had grown increasingly challenging, despite years of help. Alan admitted: “While I might be hale and hearty now, I cannot count on such good fortune indefinitely. It’s time to leave while I have the choice.”
The star confessed the decision was far from easy. Reflecting on 25 years of memories—from watching his children grow to spending time with his grandchildren—Alan admitted his eyes welled up with tears. “I cannot imagine ever loving a garden as much as the one I am leaving,” he wrote.
But Alan remains optimistic about the future, revealing plans to create a new one-and-a-half-acre garden, describing it as his next sanctuary. “I will recover. The new garden will become my next sanctuary,” he reassured fans, proving that even after saying goodbye to a beloved space, his passion for horticulture remains undimmed.
