Stacey Solomon has opened up about one of the hardest parenting moments she’s faced in recent years after saying an emotional goodbye to her eldest son, Zachary, as he headed to the United States for the summer.
The TV presenter admitted she was overwhelmed with mixed emotions as 18-year-old Zachary set off on a five-week Camp America placement, marking a major milestone in his journey toward independence.
“My Heart Hurts”
Before waving him off at the airport, Stacey shared a touching photo with her son and confessed that although she had encouraged him to embrace the opportunity, actually letting him go was far more difficult than she expected.
She told followers that Pickle Cottage would feel completely different without Zachary’s familiar presence over the coming weeks, adding that she couldn’t be prouder of him while also admitting her emotions were all over the place.
Stacey said she knows he’ll have an incredible experience and believes the camp is fortunate to have him, but confessed that her “gut is in knots” despite feeling excited for his future.
On her Instagram Stories, the presenter later revealed she felt “absolutely devastated” after leaving him at the airport, highlighting just how emotional the farewell had been.
A Major Milestone for Stacey’s Eldest Son
Zachary, born in 2008, is Stacey’s first child from her previous relationship with Dean Cox.
Now 18, he’s taking one of his biggest steps yet toward adulthood by spending part of the summer working in the United States through Camp America, an international programme that gives young people the opportunity to work at American summer camps while experiencing life abroad.
The experience allows participants to help with children’s activities, support camp operations and immerse themselves in a new culture, making it a popular choice for young adults looking to gain independence and broaden their horizons.
For Stacey, however, the excitement comes with the reality of seeing her eldest child spread his wings.
Fans Flood Stacey With Support
Many of Stacey’s followers quickly related to her emotional post, reassuring the TV favourite that her feelings were completely normal.
Parents shared their own experiences of watching children leave home for new adventures, with many reminding her that the five weeks would pass quickly and that Zachary was about to make memories that could last a lifetime.
Others praised Stacey for encouraging her son to chase new opportunities, saying the experience would help him grow in confidence and create lifelong friendships.
Camp America Sends Its Own Message
Camp America also reached out beneath Stacey’s post with a warm message of reassurance.
The organisation welcomed Zachary to its community and promised to support him throughout the summer, adding that they were confident he was about to enjoy an unforgettable adventure.
Another New Chapter for the Solomon-Swash Family
Zachary’s trip represents another significant moment for the busy blended family at Pickle Cottage.
Stacey and husband Joe Swash are raising five children together, including Rex, Rose and Belle, while Joe is also father to son Harry from a previous relationship.
Although the household will undoubtedly feel quieter while Zachary is away, Stacey’s emotional reaction struck a chord with thousands of parents who understand the bittersweet reality of watching their children grow up.
For Zachary, the summer promises new experiences, friendships and independence. For Stacey, it’s another reminder that even as children take their first steps into adulthood, they’ll always remain their parents’ little ones.
