EastEnders Fans Praise ‘Best Episode Ever’ As Phil Mitchell Breaks Down and Bids Farewell to Nigel Bates

EastEnders fans are calling the latest episode the “best ever made” after an emotional farewell between Phil Mitchell and his longtime friend, Nigel Bates. In the heart-wrenching scenes, Phil (Steve McFadden) says goodbye to Nigel (Paul Bradley) as he’s sent to a care home due to his worsening battle with early-onset dementia.

Over the course of several months, Phil has been caring for Nigel, watching as his condition slowly deteriorates. Despite their strong bond, it became clear that Nigel’s needs were becoming too much for them to handle alone. Along with Nigel’s wife, Julie (Karen Henthorn), the decision was made to move him to a care home.

In Thursday’s tear-jerking episode, Nigel returned to Albert Square and the Queen Vic for one last visit. He shared a cake and a pint with friends, having a fleeting, emotional moment when he briefly recognized his step-daughter Clare (Gemma Bissix).

The episode reached its climax when Phil, eyes brimming with tears, made the heartbreaking decision to say goodbye. In a raw, emotional moment, Phil tells his friend, “I’m sorry, Nigel, for letting you down. I love you, Nige, I do. But I can’t help, I can’t watch… I can’t do this. I’m sorry, I can’t be here for you anymore, Nige. I can’t.” He then grips Nigel’s hand one last time before walking out of the room, overwhelmed with grief.

Fans immediately flooded social media, praising the emotional depth of the episode. One fan tweeted: “Credit where credit is due, today’s episode was brilliant. Definitely the best of this era. The moment Nigel recognized Clare again was especially poignant.”

Another wrote: “I feel totally broken, just so sad seeing how quickly Nigel has worsened. The storyline has been done brilliantly, and everyone involved has been amazing, but it’s a tough watch.”

A third fan described it as “my favorite soap episode of the year so far. A devastating, community-centered half hour of television. That final Phil scene destroyed me.”

“One of, if not the best episode of the Ben Wadey era so far,” added a Reddit user. “So hard-hitting and sad. Every scene mattered.”

The episode also saw the return of Gemma Bissix as Clare, Nigel’s step-daughter, nearly 20 years after her last appearance on the BBC soap. Gemma originally portrayed Clare from 1993 to 1998, with a brief return in 2008. She shared her excitement about reprising the role: “It was a real pleasure to be asked to reprise the role of Clare for Nigel’s storyline. I was hoping to get the call because I think the fans wanted EastEnders to revisit their relationship. Nigel and Clare were a formidable pairing in the 90s with a very unique stepfather/stepdaughter dynamic!”

Gemma, 42, went on to say, “It’s been so great to reconnect with Paul and Karen after all these years. It’s crazy how time felt like it had stopped when we did! I grew up on the set of EastEnders, and it’s been a real full circle moment for me!”

As the episode ended, fans were left deeply moved by the powerful farewell, highlighting just how much Nigel’s story had resonated with the audience.
