Flora Turnbull, 33, is taking on the 2026 London Marathon in a deeply emotional tribute to her late father, beloved BBC Breakfast presenter Bill Turnbull. On April 27, the same day her father passed away in 2022 after battling prostate cancer, Flora will run to raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK. This run isnât just about crossing the finish line â it’s about continuing the legacy Bill left behind.
Originally signed up for the marathon two years ago, Flora had to defer due to pregnancy. Now, with her 17-month-old son, Felix, by her side, sheâs ready to hit the ground running â joining over 280 other runners to raise money for life-saving prostate cancer research, the most common cancer in men.
âI want to make sure that we can keep our fathers, brothers, husbands, sons, grandfathers, and friends around for as long as possible,â Flora shared, emphasizing the importance of continuing her father’s work.
Her participation is part of a larger effort to reach a ÂŁ720,000 fundraising goal for Prostate Cancer UK, funding life-saving initiatives like the ÂŁ42 million TRANSFORM trial, which aims to revolutionize prostate cancer screening and establish a national screening program.
A Legacy of Advocacy and Awareness
Bill Turnbullâs fight against prostate cancer began in 2018, and his tireless advocacy turned him into a beacon of hope for many men. His efforts led to a surge in diagnoses, known as the âFry-Turnbull Effectâ, helping thousands of men get tested and potentially saving their lives. Flora reflects on the impact of her father’s work: âSince Dadâs diagnosis, he worked tirelessly to raise awareness. After his death, our family was overwhelmed by the love and gratitude we received, especially from men inspired to get tested after hearing Dadâs story.â
Bill’s Unrelenting Support for Prostate Cancer UK
Billâs support for Prostate Cancer UK was unwavering. From TV interviews to charity campaigns, he raised significant funds and awareness. During the pandemic, he even hosted a Fatherâs Day quiz that raised over ÂŁ10,000 for the charity. His work didnât stop there; he worked closely with Wycombe Wanderers FC to raise awareness in the football community, and in 2023, the club raised ÂŁ390,000 in his honor.
Now, Flora is carrying the torch forward, running in her fatherâs footsteps and ensuring that his mission continues.
Floraâs Marathon Effort: A Tribute to Family and Determination
Prostate Cancer UKâs Fundraising Director, Chris Jarrett, expressed his admiration for Floraâs involvement: âBill was such an integral part of our Prostate Cancer UK family, and his efforts helped thousands of men seek help. Flora is continuing his legacy, and we are so grateful for her involvement in this yearâs marathon.â
Floraâs participation in the marathon is not only a tribute to her fatherâs dedication but also a reminder of the vital need for early detection and innovative research in the fight against prostate cancer.
As Flora laces up her shoes for the London Marathon, her journey will inspire others to join the fight against prostate cancer, ensuring Bill Turnbullâs incredible legacy lives on for generations to come.
