Jimmy Kimmel has defended his controversial joke about Melania Trump looking like an “expectant widow” during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, a comment that has sparked widespread backlash in the wake of a shooting attempt at the event. The late-night host addressed the controversy on his show, insisting the joke was intended as a light-hearted roast about the age gap between Melania and her husband, former President Donald Trump.

However, after the failed shooting attempt by 31-year-old suspect Cole Tomas Allen, who allegedly targeted Trump administration members, Kimmel’s words have drawn further scrutiny. In his defense, Kimmel explained that his joke was not a call to violence and emphasized his long-standing advocacy against gun violence. He even suggested that Melania herself should have a conversation with her husband about the impact of violent rhetoric.

The attempt on the President’s life, which occurred just hours after Kimmel’s monologue, led to widespread fear as Secret Service agents rushed to secure the event. Despite the chaos, Kimmel took the opportunity to apologize for the joke, expressing sympathy for the distress Melania and others experienced during the incident.

Kimmel also used the moment to criticize Trump’s remarks on violent rhetoric, suggesting the President should address the matter as part of his broader public image.

The controversial joke and the shooting attempt have raised new questions about the role of comedians in political discourse and the line between humor and harm.
