Former Grange Hill and London’s Burning star John Alford has tragically died in prison at the age of 54, just two months after being sentenced for sexually assaulting two teenage girls.
Alford, whose real name was John Shannon, was discovered dead at HMP Bure in Norfolk on March 13, 2026. His death occurred shortly after he received an eight-and-a-half-year sentence for crimes he committed in April 2022. The actor was found guilty of sexually assaulting two girls, aged 14 and 15, after providing them with alcohol.
A spokesperson for the Prison Service confirmed Alford’s death, stating, “John Shannon died in prison on 13 March 2026. As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will investigate.”
Alford, born in Holloway, North London, was once a beloved figure in British television. He gained fame for playing rebellious teenager Robbie Wright on the BBC’s Grange Hill from 1985 to 1989. His most prominent role came in 1993 when he joined the ITV drama London’s Burning as firefighter Billy Ray. His success on the show propelled him to fame, even leading to a short-lived pop career in the 1990s.
However, Alford’s career began unraveling in 1997, when he was dismissed from London’s Burning and jailed for nine months after being convicted of supplying cocaine and cannabis to an undercover journalist. This marked the start of a series of personal and legal troubles that ultimately overshadowed his professional success.
Alford’s most recent conviction stemmed from a deeply disturbing case in which he was found guilty of multiple sexual offences against two young girls. The court heard that Alford knowingly provided the girls with alcohol before assaulting them.
